Shonda Rhimes Master Class: Halfway There

A lot of you have been asking about the TV writing class I’m taking online and since I’m exactly halfway through it, I decided to share a little bit about what I’ve been doing!

When I signed up for the class, I really had no expectations. I’d never taken a Master Class before so I had no idea what it would be like. Part of me thought it would be one video, maybe an hour long, and then I’d be on my own, while another part of me thought Shonda would walk into my house and start teaching me. (Rationality had already left me at that point.) Instead, what I’ve gotten is a network of amazing writers, so many resources I’m still trying to work my way through them all, and unbeatable advice from the Queen of Television herself that I wound’t have gotten anywhere else.

A lot of you already know I’ve written a full pilot script for my “TV show” (it’s in quotes because I know the probability of it ever making it on screen is about 0.2) but I didn’t really talk about how I got to that point. So, let’s go through the lessons, one by one, and I’ll walk you through my brain for a few minutes! Continue reading “Shonda Rhimes Master Class: Halfway There”

Grey’s Anatomy 13.24 Episode Review

Season 13, episode 24: Ring of Fire (Written by Stacy McKee)

First off, I want to say thank you to Jerrika for breathing life into such a complex, strong, badass character for the past five years. We will all miss you and Stephanie Edwards. And Stacy, what a beautiful ending you gave her. (More on this later!!) I have said it every time and I’ll say it again: every time I see your name as writer, I know I’m about to have one hell of an hour, and this one did not disappoint.

So, back to normal. This review is going to be spent mainly inside Stephanie’s head. I’m going to try to work through her thoughts and fears in the next couple of minutes, and if you could all play along with me, that would be great.

“When life forces us to do something impossible, an explosion happens inside the body. A rush of hormones blasts through us; making us stronger, making us faster. Biology overrides fear and that makes the impossible possible.” -Meredith Grey

Grey’s Anatomy 13.18 Episode Review

Season 13, episode 18: Be Still, My Soul (Written by Meg Marinis; Directed by Ellen Pompeo)

First thing’s first: how amazing was Ellen Pompeo’s directing debut? I’ve been waiting for two weeks to write this review and the day is finally here! Seeing this episode at PaleyFest was such a treat, and then getting to hear Ellen talk about her experiences was inspiring to me and so many others. So before I get into the review, I just wanted to say to Ellen, thank you and I can’t wait to see you directing again next season.

Grey’s Anatomy 13.16 Episode Review

Season 13, episode 16: Who Is He (And What Is He to You?) (Written by Elisabeth Finch)

Ok, so last night we all saw #JaprilTheSequel and I’m sure there were squeals all across the country. It was really weird hearing Jackson doing the VO but it’s a bubble episode, what do you expect? Here it is:

“Freezing. Choking. Getting tongue tied. It’s what we call it when your mind goes from brilliant to blank. You can prepare all you want, but the feeling can still hit you out of nowhere. So when it hits you, when your mind shuts down, when you open your mouth and no words come out, the good news is, it happens to all of us.” -Jackson Avery
